The Best Way to Awaken in the Morning
Last night was the first night this year that I left the windows wide open all night long. I have left them cracked open a few times recently as the weather has been warming but not more than a crack. That is one thing I dislike about winter; is that I can’t leave my windows open.
But Spring is abruptly upon us here on the Great Plains of Turtle Island. It has finally gotten warm enough to leave my windows open all night and, for me, that is a truly wonderful thing.

Yes, it was a bit nippy in my bedroom early this morning but I like that. As I slowly began to awaken I could feel the cool air on my face. Before I ever opened my eyes the first thing I became consciously aware of was the thundering symphony of birdsong coming from the trees outside my bedroom window. I kept my eyes closed and allowed the bird music to slowly pull me out of the sleep state into the awake state. To me, this is the very ultimate way to awaken in the morning.

Birds are notoriously early risers. At no time of day is the birdsong louder than in the predawn hours. That is the time of day birds rule.
I am neither a birder nor a birdwatcher. I am a bird freak. (There is a difference.) I am also a lot like a bird in that my very favorite time of day is that time when the birds are loudest; when the sky is just starting to lighten before the sun pokes its life-giving face above the horizon. If I wake up in the morning and the sun is already up then that thoroughly ruins my whole day. It has been many years since that has happened.

Alarm clocks are truly horrible things. I prefer to let the birds wake me up. It is so much gentler and empowering.
I am convinced that all the houseplants in my bedroom appreciated, not only the cool morning air, but the cacophony of birdsong flooding in through my wide open windows. Plants, like humans, react to |
birdsong — especially trees. Trees have a very intimate relationship with birds. I have often wondered what it must be like to be a tree full of birds singing their hearts out. That must be one hell of an euphoric sensation. I have several trees in my bedroom (my apartment is like a jungle) but those trees never get to experience having birds on their branches. With the windows wide open at least they got to “hear” the birdsong and I am sure that they appreciate that and are empowered by that and encouraged by that to grow.
I also happen to be a tree freak.
Even once I was fully awake this morning I kept my eyes closed and focused exclusively on the bird music. I luxuriated in it for quite some time before I finally opened my eyes and blessed the day. Once I finally got out of bed I quickly realized just how nippy it was in my bedroom. The cold was worth it, though, to be able to awaken to birdsong. Thank goodness for open windows.
